Any gardening tips??

admin on February 22nd, 2009

I am planting a garden this year for my first time, can anyone tell me when to plant what to plant and anything else that you find helpful in gardening.
Thanks in advance for all your help

try a mix of veggies and flowers. Do stuff that you like to eat and is not so picky about growing. and if you've got the space try out some kind of melon. Get a bunch of seed catalogs and get excited, check out some garden books from your local library.

Also, don't try to do too much. Start small and really do it well. Next year you can always expand

Some good seed companies - you can look at their catalogs online-
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
Johnny's Select
The Seed Savers Exchange
High Mowing Seeds
Fedco (get the fedco paper catalog it is totally fabulous!)

  1. Most seed packets will have directions for planting.

Just be sure to plant things you will enjoy.
If you hate tomatos then don't plant them!

the best advice I can give is invest in some leaky hose for watering. With this kind of hose you lay it around the base of the plants and it leaks the water directly into the soil. None is lost to evaporation like sprinklers!

  2. Wait until there is no danger of frost. I like to plant colorful annuals like zinnia, verbena, impatiens, geraniums.

  4. Container gardening is fun and easy, it also is interesting. I grow a lot of vegetables in containers including lettuce and tomatoes. I plan to expand on the plant selectiions this season.
While everyone else is playing with weeds, I'm harvesting my first lettuce already.
I am putting very little in the ground this year. That's where the bugs live and weeds and grass. I plant with a specific goal in mind, why should these pesky weeds and pesky pests get in the way.Try container gardeing, you might like it. Choose dwarf varieities. Don't forget to fertilize and do select pots that will fit the mature plant.
Also, containers require more water than ground plantings. I'd rather water them then weed them.

Burgass.com 3.vonbourgondien.com.Michiganbulb has a 20.00 off of 40.00 or more coupon.Check out this site for info. on how to create a cottage garden theme:aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/southerngarden/cottagedesign.html

Know your soil. If you try to put a plant that loves moisture in dry sandy soil it won't survive and vice versa. Get a soil test kit if you aren't familiar with your soil. You might need to amend it so that your plants will flourish.

Know your plants. Plants that love the sun should be in a flowerbed with at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Shade lovers will appreciate somewhere not so light.

If you have never gardened before I would recommend starting with bedding plants. Growing from seed can be disappointing in that not everything sprouts. Bedding plants are already established and you can see how they look ( color, etc ) before you buy them. The staff at the garden center will help you in choosing plants for your yard.
