Good gardening tips?

admin on December 22nd, 2008

I want to start a garden and i've tried to grow flowers before but they never seem to grow or even stay pretty. Is there any good tips I should know?

Well… Plant flowers that ALWAYS work good… Zinnias, marigolds, Cosmos, Nasturtiums… All work fine as Beginner plants… Good luck!…

  1. find out what growing zone you are in and then pick plants that grow best in your zone.. Go to Gardenweb there's tons of info there.. you can ask all types of questions there too…

  2. Are you putting them in a border? I like to put larger flowers in the back then medium size then small like Allysum

Go to the local Nursery or Walmart etc. see what they have.

Is this a sunny spot or part shade?
Some flowers like one or the other.

I would go to the library and check out a book on gardening then go pick the flowers you want.

    Have fun

  3. Start with good soil. Your local extension service (usually in the government pages of your local telephone book) can tell you what grows well in your area, and you can also take soil in to them and they will test it, free. They can tell you if you have acidic soil, alkaline soil, sandy, clay, etc., etc. No matter what, compost will help improve your soil. You can also mix in slow-release fertilizers, water retention crystals, etc., to meet the needs of your particular location. Once you have mastered the art of cultivating good soil, you will find that whatever you try to grow in that soil, has a much better chance of succeeding….

    Hope this helps.

  6. Make sure you're planting the right types of flowers and plants for your zone. Also check out a good basic gardening guide for beginners like the one below. It has videos showing you how to get started with the basics. Happy gardening!
